Girl Meets Change Review

Time to talk about a book I LOVE, so be prepared! I was honored to be part of the launch team for Kristen Strong’s Girl Meets Change: Truths to Carry You Through Life’s Transitions. After I was accepted and learned a little more about the book, I wondered if being part of the launch team was really a good idea or not. Generally, I’ve liked change. I haven’t been afraid to embrace new adventures, and I didn’t know what I would really take away from this book.

And then I read Girl Meets Change, and WOW. God knew what He was doing when He stuck my name on that launch team list, because I needed to hear a lot of things in this book. Because there have been changes in the last few years that have shaken me to my core and left me wondering about pretty much everything. Change has given me fear and vanquished my bravery. And instead of dealing with all that, I put a smile on my face and pushed through, because when God changes your plans, you’re supposed to take it in stride.

But it’s not always that easy, is it?

And so as I read Girl Meets Change, I realized more and more that there was a lot of heart-work I needed to do related to some really big changes over the past few years (like, I don’t know…being med-evac’d from Africa and plopped back into American life). But most importantly, Kristen reassured me that I needed time to grieve the losses while accepting a new reality. That it was okay to not always take change in stride. Because sometimes accepting change is a process.

So, basically, I would recommend this book to everyone. Seriously. Because we live like, and life has changes. So grab yourself a copy, and read my “official” review below.

Girl Meets Change

Girl Meets Change, by Kristen Strong, is a sweetly written message of hope to anyone going through change. Since everyone at some point faces change, I would recommend this book to everyone. Kristen’s written is clear and engaging, and she speaks beautiful truths throughout the book, preparing the reader to not only accept and endure change, but to embrace and thrive in change.

Life happens, and change happens. This is why you need this book. Kristen dives deeply into how we are hardwired to avoid change, but turns it around and shows how, through trust in God, we can break that hardwiring and learn to live a life thriving in change. We can learn to meet change and walk with it contentedly.

This book isn’t a “how-to” book on ways to get through change. It’s much more than that. It’s an encouraging story on how to approach change and learn to not only live through it, but thrive from it. If we’re all honest, there’s been a change in all of our lives that has left us grasping for something firm to hold on to. Change that has shaken us to our core and left us with far more questions than answers. Maybe it seems like a small change to others, but is an impossible huge change for you.

Kristen writes about so much more than just enduring change. She shares her stories about accepting change, and grieving when change brings an unwanted end to a chapter of joy. She dives into the hopes we can cling to in the midst of change, and the role community and friendship plays. Kristen reminds us that change doesn’t happen to discourage us and break us down. Rather, change is meant to stretch us and grow us. “Sometimes you must leave the comforts of what is to embrace the potential of what will be.” (page 162) God has bigger plans that we imagine in our seasons of change, and how we respond to and live through change speaks volumes to those around us.

One of my favorite things about this book is that Kristen isn’t coming from a “you should do this” perspective, but rather from a “me too” perspective. She shares her heart and her struggles with change, and the work the Lord did in her over many years. This book will give you the tools you need to deal with change, whether it’s a change that’s coming or one that’s already landed on your doorstep. As I read, I felt like we were sitting on the front porch together, having a cup of coffee and chatting like old friends. You will not regret buying this book!

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher, Revell, in exchange for my honest review.

  1. Great review, Jen! And great book, Kristin! I love this line “…a sweetly written message of hope…” because isn’t that what we all need? She has such a tender voice. Praying that this message goes forth in power on her launch day!

  2. Well, add another book to my NEED to read pile. My family has gone through a lot of changes this year, some good, some horrible. It can be so hard to adjust either way!

    1. It definitely needs to go on your pile…sorry if it’s growing very tall! But with all the changes you’ve gone through, this book is for you!

  3. I love this! I am reading it now and loving it too – for all the same reasons! I must have requested it from Revell Reads but I forgot – so when it ‘mysteriously’ showed up on my doorstep literally on a day that change was being hurled at me at break neck speed… well… I didn’t think it was as funny as maybe God did! And yet… His timing is perfect and this book really is a gift!

    1. That’s so awesome! I just finished my first review (on another book) for Revell, and yeah…they don’t warn you it’s coming, do they? 🙂 Glad God’s hand was in the timing!

  4. I need to check this book out. I love this line from the book: “Sometimes you must leave the comforts of what is to embrace the potential of what will be.” (page 162)
